Robotics Engineers

Build and code robots that sense and react.

What they build

4 courses, in the order they are taught. Each one finishes something, so a child who does only the first has still built a robot.

VEX GO: Machines That Move

6 weeks · one 90-minute session a week

Six weeks of gears, grippers and driving bases. Ends with a timed trial and a robot the child built themselves.

  • 01Engineering

Mission 1: A base that drives

Drive the length of the table and stop on the tape, three times running.

    Weeks 1–2
  • 02Engineering

    Mission 2: Gears and grippers

Pick up a cup, carry it across the table and put it down without dropping it.

    Weeks 3–4
  • 03Capstone

    Mission 3: Trial day

Run the course twice and beat your own first time.

    Weeks 5–6

Robotics Engineers: Foundations

12 weeks · one 2-hour session a week

Twelve weeks on VEX GO, from a base that drives straight to a robot that crosses the room on its own and a demo day.

  • 01Engineering

    Mission 1: Make it move

Build a chassis that crosses the room and stops where you said it would.

    Weeks 1–3
  • 02Coding

    Mission 2: Make it think

Program a square path the robot drives the same way twice.

    Weeks 4–6
  • 03Sensors

Mission 3: Build an autonomous robot

Cross the room and stop at the wall with nobody touching the robot.

    Weeks 7–9
  • 04Capstone

    Mission 4: Showcase

Present your robot to an audience and explain one thing you changed and why.

    Weeks 10–12

VEX AIM: Robots That See

12 weeks · one 2-hour session a week · comes after Robotics Engineers: Foundations

Twelve weeks with a camera on the front. Drive it, code it, then teach it to find the right ball and bring it back with nobody holding the controller.

  • 01Engineering

    Mission 1: Take the controls

Drive the gate course end to end without knocking over a barrel.

    Weeks 1–3
  • 02Coding

    Mission 2: Code the drive

Code a lap of the field that finishes within a hand-width of where it started.

    Weeks 4–6
  • 03Sensors

Mission 3: Teach it to see

Find the red ball among three and bring back only that one, using the camera alone.

    Weeks 7–9
  • 04Capstone

    Mission 4: Depot Run

Score the most deliveries in two minutes with nobody touching the robot.

    Weeks 10–12

VEX AIM: Autonomy Squad

6 weeks · one 2-hour session a week · comes after VEX AIM: Robots That See

Six weeks in Python, two robots on one field, and a robot that changes its mind when the way is blocked.

  • 01Coding

Mission 1: From blocks to Python

Rewrite last term's lap in Python and make it one second faster.

    Weeks 1–2
  • 02Sensors

    Mission 2: Sense and decide

Block the route on the day. The robot must still finish.

    Weeks 3–4
  • 03team

    Mission 3: Squad match

Two robots, one field, two minutes, no collisions.

    Weeks 5–6
